A retrospective study which was published in Ophthalmology, reveals that prescription NSAID users have a lower risk of developing age-related macular degeneration.
Researchers evaluated data from people who had prescription NSAIDs as well as those who never had prescription NSAIDs. The study included 634.794 prescription NSAID users and an equal number of those not taking prescription NSAIDs with an average age of around 59 for both groups.
A decreased risk for AMD development was found at the 6 month, one-year, three-year and five-year time points after the index date for the NSAID patients compared to the non-users. This protective effect was noted for both non-exudative AMD as well as exudative AMD. Even NSAID patients with comorbidities including diabetes, heart disease, smoking and obesity, among others, demonstrated this lower risk of developing AMD.
