Previous analysis hinted at the possibility that metformin could possibly offer protection against age-related macular degeneration (AMD) but a new cohort study has debunked that speculation.

Researchers involved in the cohort study compared diabetic patients in Singapore and the UK and found that the use of metformin did not lower the incidence or frequentness amongst the study group.

Study results from the two cohort studies were published in Ophthalmology. Data from the SEED study in Singapore as well as the UK Biobank was reviewed and information from 2,869 participants was analyzed. All study subjects were diabetic with an average age of 61.1 years with 54.5% being women.

No association was found between the use of metformin and incidence of AMD in diabetic patients.
