With many things vying for our attention these days, it can be hard to focus on the task at hand. It is possible to improve your attention span with some simple changes to your diet.

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Perhaps the most basic thing you can do is to always be sure you are properly hydrated. The human brain is composed mainly of water and dehydration can cause headaches as well as impaired cognitvie abilities. If sipping on water isn't your thing, fruits are high in water content so they can help boost your hydration. Skip the alcohol, however, as alcohol is dehydrating.

As your mom probably always told you, "Breakfast is the most important meal of the day." As it turns out, there is a lot of truth to that. Eating breakfast has been found to improve memory, attention and overall mental performance. Unhealthy breakfast choices or skipping the morning meal can lead to low energy, irritability and lower attention.

Variety in what you eat matters as well. Pick a wide range of foods for your meals including vegetables, fruits, beans, whole grins and nuts. All of these help promote feelings of fullness and curb cravings, which can help keep you focused and less distracted.

So if you are frustrated with your inability to stay focused, take a look at your diet and see if implementing some of these suggestions works for you.
