You may want to put all of your eggs in one basket when it comes to brain health. A recent study found that eating two to four eggs a week helps to lower blood cholesterol levels.
The humble egg has gotten a bad wrap over the years and has previously been vilified for its high cholesterol.
Researchers analyzed health data of 890 women and men from a heathy aging study that, over a course of four years, tested three areas of cognitive function in middle-aged or older adults.
Women in the study who reported eating more eggs demonstrated less cognitive decline in both short- and long- term memory. While the men did not have the same results, a similar data analysis of a cohort over a different time period did reveal that men who at eggs scored higher on cognitive tests while women did not.
These study results indicate that while there are other factors at play in cognitive outcomes, eggs are rich in heart healthy saturated fat and offer people a high-protein, nutrient-dense option that can actually lower the body's cholesterol as well as protect against cognitive decline.
