Results from a recent study reveal that diets rich in vitamins B and E can help lower the risk of developing age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

Researchers from the Zunyi Medical University utilized data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) to conduct a cross-sectional study. The researchers determined that participants with higher vitamin B and E levels had a lower incidence of AMD. They also discovered that the forms of vitamin B were also relevant to helping prevent AMD. Vitamins B1, B2, B6 and B12 as well as vitamin E were found to be in higher levels for those who did not have AMD compared to those who were diagnosed with AMD.

A cross-sectional study is not able to prove a causal relationship between vitamin consumption and AMD but researchers believe that eating a diet rich in B and E vitamins may help reduce the risk of developing AMD.
