Remember when turning 40, 50, and 60 seemed like the universe has shifted? Well those birthdays seem like speed bumps once you receive your red, white and blue Medicare card! I gulped when it arrived in the mail. My goodness, when I began my medical career 35 years ago, people with Medicare cards were OLD.
And maybe it's a weird coincidence, but hitting that government milestone comes with new risks and yes, goodies. Cardiac Risk Score automatically goes up 1 point. I'm waking up each morning well before the birds chirp. One bad meal choice adds 2-4 lbs. on the next morning's scale reading.
At the same time, I'm feeling a bit wiser than I was last year, and a lot wiser than I was at 30. Despite the daily stresses, life seems especially sweet, even with some of the world's ugliness. I've always been proactive about my health, but at this point in my life, I want to feel as good as I can, function at a high level, and enjoy the rest of the ride as long as I can. Every day this week, I'll be sending you a brief snippet about steps I'm taking that might interest you. If you're 65 or older, share what you've learned at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/turning-65.
