There are several studies showing chiropractic manipulation of the cervical spine causing complications, including damage to the delicate nerve plexus and stroke, by damaging one of the carotid or vertebral arteries that are routed through the soft tissues of the neck. Now there is another concern with cervical manipulation - risk to eye health.
A case report was published in the journal Ophthalmology Retina, in which a 51 year-old woman suffered a hemorrhage in the most critical portion of her central retina used for detail vision, following cervical spine manipulation.
If you are currently under chiropractic care, you should be aware about the additional risks to cervical spine (neck) manipulations. A discussion with your chiropractor about these risks is recommended.
