Results from a study were recently presented at the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology Congress that reveal a link between psoriasis and age-related macular degeneration.

The study was a 15-year retrospective cohort study that included 22,901 psoriasis patients over the age of 55. Study findings demonstrated a link between psoriasis and both dry and wet macular degeneration.

Lipid dysregulation is behind psoriasis, which is a systemic inflammatory disease. Abnormal lipid deposits within the retina also are the cause of macular degeneration so researchers believe that having psoriasis contributes to the risk of developing macular degeneration.

Researchers also found that the psoriasis patients who underwent biologic therapy saw their risk of developing macular degeneration lowered by 27% compared to those who only treated their psoriasis with topical corticosteroids.
