When it comes to drinking coffee, avoiding the instant variety may be in the best interest of your eyes.
A study that was recently published in Food Science & Nutrition reveals that instant coffee drinkers had almost 8 times the increased risk of developing dry age-related macular degeneration. No correlation was noted for those who drank fresh ground coffee or decaffeinated coffee.
Researchers from Hubei University of Medicine in China analyzed data of over 500,000 individuals from both the UK Biobank and FinnGen datasets. The researchers looked at coffee consumption and broke it down into instant coffee, decaffeinated and fresh ground.
Instant coffee contains acrylamide, oxidized lipids and other compounds that aren't found in freshly ground coffee and it is these extra compounds that are thought to be behind the increased risk for developing macular degeneration.
