A recent Duke University Eye Center study took a look at the use of hydrogel ocular sealant in cataract patients and whether there was any benefit in its application.
The study examined 90 eyes of 45 cataract surgery patients: 45 eyes had the hydrogel ocular sealant applied and 45 eyes did not.
Hydrogel ocular sealant is used to secure clear corneal incisions during cataract surgery. The study found that there was no statistical difference in surgical time, wound leaks or corneal edema between those who received the sealant and those who did not.
The study findings indicate that patient counseling regarding the use of sealant for wound closure may not be warranted.
