Statins are one of the most commonly prescribed medicines in the world but they may by linked to a higher risk of dry eye disease.

Recent study results published in the American Journal of Ophthalmology pointed to a positive link between dry eye disease and the use of statins. Researchers reviewed 6 observational studies to determine if statin therapy was associated with dry eye disease.

While the review findings indicated a positive link between statin use and dry eye disease, the researchers confidence in the evidence was very low due to the study design limitations and some inconsistencies among the studies reviewed.

Ultimately, researchers note that patient education is important along with monitoring of symptoms to effectively manage dry eye disease while taking statins.
