Researchers recently presented findings from a retrospective study that highlights a possible link between periodontal disease and eye disease.
The data from more than 25,000 patients with periodontal disease in the TriNetX database was examined by researchers. The patients had been to an ophthalmologist within a year of being diagnosed with periodontal disease.
What researchers discovered was that when compared to patients without periodontal disease, the patients with periodontal disease had an increased likelihood of developing a wide range of eye conditions within 10 years of diagnosis of their periodontal disease. These findings add to previous studies which linked poor oral health to systemic inflammation.
In light of these study findings, researchers believe that collaboration between dental professionals and eye care providers would offer earlier preventive treatment to the patients.
