As kids, we were told to brush our teeth twice a day, and while that is great habit, it doesn't get of all of the bothersome plaque. That's where flossing comes in.
Getting rid of as much food and plaque that's stuck to your teeth is important to help maintain not only strong teeth and healthy gums, but it's also important in keeping your heart, and immune system strong.
Plaque removal is the most obvious benefit of flossing. Plaque provides a breeding ground for bacteria. Bacteria release acid, which then decay tooth enamel which can then lead to cavities. Along with keeping teeth healthy, flossing helps prevent gum disease by preventing plaque buildup which is the primary factor in gum inflammation and gum disease.
When you think of supporting immune health, flossing probably doesn't come to mind but flossing can help reduce inflammation which is an immune response to injury or illness. Flossing helps to maintain a healthy microbiome.
And while you may not be thinking of heart health being associated with oral health, studies have shown that gum disease can cause an increase in the risk of heart disease. Even flossing just once a week, can help reduce the risk of certain types of stroke and atrial fibrillation.
So the next time you pick up your toothbrush, grab some floss and pick up a healthy new habit!
