What time of day you exercise may have a greater impact on your health if you are overweight or a Type 2 diabetic.
A study that was recently published in Science Daily revealed that evening exercise for people dealing with obesity and Type 2 diabetes and did the most moderate to vigorous evening exercise between the hours of 6 pm and midnight had the lowest risk of premature death or death from heart disease. At least 3 minutes of evening exercise resulted in positive outcomes.
Researchers from the University of Sydney, Australia, studied 30,000 people for almost 8 years. All study participants were clinically obese and were given a wearable fitness tracking device to log movement and determine what time of day they were most active.
Evening exercise had previously been shown to be beneficial for Type 2 diabetics because heart pumping activity is believed to offset glucose intolerance and additional complications.
While these findings don't establish a causal link, they do point to timing of physical activity playing a role in recommendations for management of obese patients and Type 2 diabetics as well as generalized preventive health measures.
