Researchers from the University of Liverpool have discovered that the common diabetic drug, metformin may offer patients a lower risk of progression of age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

Photographs were reviewed by researchers of 2,000 people who took part in a diabetic eye disease screening program in Liverpool over the course of 5 years. Photographs where AMD was present were compared to photographs of those who were taking metformin and those who were not taking the drug.

Results of the review revealed that people who were taking metformin were 37% less likely to progress to the intermediate stage of AMD over a five year period compared to people who did not take metformin.
