Coffee drinkers rejoice! Scientists have revealed that drinking black coffee may help regulate blood sugar.
Coffee is loved all over the world for its taste, and energizing effect. While previous research has shed light on coffee's link to helping to reduce the likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes, this recent study highlights the ability of black coffee to regulate blood sugar.
Researchers evaluated data of 6,613 participants from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 2019 and 2021. Participants were asked what they ate and drank over a 24-hour period and coffee drinkers were broken down into those who drank black coffee and those who added sugar and/or cream. Participants were then grouped into how much coffee they drank a day as well as a group for those who did not drink coffee.
The analysis revealed that drinking 2 cups of coffee a day resulted in a slightly better glucose metabolism compared to not having any coffee. For those who consumed coffee with sugar or cream, no clear benefit was noticed.
Differences were noted between men and women. Women who drank two cups of black coffee daily, had better levels of health markers associated with blood sugar regulation than their male counterparts.
While there were limitations to the study, the results do suggest that if you are looking to help support better glucose metabolism, plain black coffee may help you with that goal. As always, moderation is key as well as adjusting other lifestyle factors such as diet and exercise to suit your individual needs is important as well.
