New research published in the Microbiome journal points to a possible link between a diet rich in citrus fruits being linked to a lower risk of depression. Researchers theorize that eating oranges can possibly help contribute to more of the Faecalibacterium prausnitzii bacteria being present in the gut micrbiome. This particular bacteria has been linked to a lower risk of depression. The study only highlights a possible link and not causation.

Future studies will be needed to determine whether a direct link does exist between citrus consumption and the production of F. prausnitzii as well as whether this bacteria does impact levels of dopamine and serotonin.
