An AREDS lutein eye vitamin for smokers, with no beta carotene.
The National Eye Institute's Age Related Eye Disease Study, published in 2001, showed that high potency nutritional supplementation slowed the progression of macular degeneration. However, this formula included the precursor form of Vitamin A, known as beta-carotene, which was shown in two large studies to increase the risk to smokers.
VisiVite AREDS Lutein+ Formula includes four out of five of the ingredients in the National Eye Institute vitamin supplement formula but makes one important substitution. Rather than using the carotenoid, beta carotene, VisiVite AREDS Lutein+ Macular Degeneration Formula uses 10 mg lutein derived from marigold flowers.
Unlike AREDS, which used 180 mg of Vitamin E in the synthetic DL form, VisiVite AREDS Lutein+ contains 268mg Natural Vitamin E from plant oil in the D form. May be opened into food or drink for patients that have difficulty swallowing.
