Vitamin D deficiency plays role in age-related macular degeneration for those 65 years and older

A longitudinal study shed light on the association between seasonally adjusted vitamin D levels and the risk of developing age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

The study results were published in Ophthalmology Science and had 429 participants who were 65 years and older. The study participants were followed for 18 years. Baseline vitamin D levels were measured and categorized according to whether they were sufficient, insufficient or deficient levels. Measurements greater than 50 nmol/l were considered sufficient; 25 to 49 nmol/l were insufficient and less than 25 were deficient.

Researchers found that participants with deficient levels had a notably higher risk of developing intermediate AMD compared to those with sufficient levels and those with insufficient levels were borderline increased risk. 

Additional studies would be needed to determine whether improving D levels can affect the progression of AMD.
