Diabetics with retinopathy or those who want to avoid retinopathy, would benefit from two VisiVite formulas, a study shows.
The study, published in the International Journal of Ophthalmology,  showed that diabetics with retinopathy had lower lutein and zeaxanthin blood levels than those without diabetes. The authors hypothesize that this may be due to poor diet, poor absorption in the face of hyperglycemia, or that low lutein and zeaxanthin levels in the retina may increase oxidative stress and destroy microcirculation.
Importantly, levels of lutein and zeaxanthin were able to be significantly improved with three months of oral supplementation.
As a result of this and other similar studies, most eye doctors are now recommending ocular nutritional supplements for their diabetic patients at risk for retinopathy, or those who already have retinopathy.
