Recently, Chinese researchers have verified that the polyphenol metabolites found in resveratrol are able to cross protective barriers and offer potential benefits to help protect vision. The polyphenol metabolites were found in the outer and the inner structures of the human eye. Researchers examined 35 eyes of men and women who were undergoing eye surgery after retinal detachment and had been given a trans-resveratrol supplement orally. Researchers were able to detect the resveratrol in only the outer structure (conjunctiva) but the three metabolites were found in the conjuctiva and the aqueous fluid as well as the vitreous gel in the eye. Previous studies have demonstrated that resveratrol has potent anti-inflammatory properties and antioxidant benefits and while further research is needed¬†researchers believe that resveratrol does have potential in treating macular degeneration, open-angle glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy.
