Mediterranean diet deters Macular Degeneration

Mo
More research has boosted the findings that a Mediterranean diet can lower the risk of developing macular degeneration. A Mediterranean diet is high in fish, fruit and grains and low in saturated fat and sweeteners. The most recent study involved over 5,000 people from all over Europe with an average age of 73.2 years. The study included a baseline eye exam, digital retinal color photography and a food-frequency questionnaire with which researchers assigned a Mediterranean Diet Score (MDS) on a scale of 0-9. Participants who were in the highest adherence bracket of diet scores had a 20% lower risk of developing large drusen compared to study participants in the lowest adherence bracket.*
