A new application developed by researchers at the Royal Holloway University London converts electronic books (ebooks) into a single line of continuously scrolling text. This format allows readers to use their peripheral vision to read.
People with macular degeneration lose sight from the center of the field of vision. This makes it difficult to focus on detail and particularly difficult to focus on large chunks of text.
The scrolling text format that is created by the MD_evReader app has an adjustable speed and the text is in large brightly colored letters. The app is available for the iPad. Volunteers who have tested the app have noted that their reading ability was greatly improved using the application.
