Summer is officially here and with that, Americans are spending more time outside enjoying the summer sun.

But that increased sun exposure also means taking precautions against getting too much sun. The great debate these days regarding sun protection is whether to use chemical or mineral sunscreen. There has been controversy recently regarding the safety of chemical sunscreens.

A lot of people like the convenience of chemical sunscreens because of their ease of application without leaving a sticky, white residue. While chemical sunscreens do get absorbed by the body, there is not any current safety data regarding the extent that these sunscreen ingredients have on our long-term health. The ingredients in chemical sunscreen absorb UV light.

Mineral sunscreens provide a "physical" barrier on your skin to deflect the harmful UV light, which is different than the absorbing effect that chemical sunscreens have. Mineral sunscreens contain either zinc oxide or titanium oxide.

The main thing to look for when purchasing either a chemical or mineral sunscreen is that it offers both UVA and UVB protection and has a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30 and is water-resistant. An SPF 30 means that the sunscreen blocks about 97% of UV light. Don't be fooled by a higher price tag of some of the name brand sunscreens; generic brands offer the same protective benefit as the pricier brands.

If you would rather forgo bathing yourself in sunscreen of any kind, be sure to wear protective clothing. With UV protection offered in outdoor clothing, it's even easier to protect yourself. Also be sure to wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses to protect your face, scalp and eyes.

Enjoying the summer sun is a healthy thing to do! Don't miss out on the fun and just take the necessary steps to protect your skin while you are outside.
