Google is pairing up with it's sister company, Verily, to make screening for diabetic retinopathy and diabetic edema more accessible for patients in India.
India faces a shortage of more than 100,000 eye doctors and an epidemic of diabetic retinopathy.
The technology utilizes algorithms to detect the eye diseases in medical imaging and was recently approved by European regulators for use in medical settings to screen for both diabetic retinopathy and diabetic edema.
While the technology is commonly used in the U.S. to help doctors prioritize patients at high risk for the disease, in other countries with more relaxed regulations and a shortage of doctors, like in India, the technology will be relied on more to make the actual diagnosis.
