While it's common knowledge that our gut has the starring role in digestion and converting food into energy, many of us don't know what foods can be harmful to the gut.
Not only does the gut manage our digestion, it also contains 70% of our immune system and helps to fight off illness. So the importance of maintaining good gut health can't be stressed enough. Not only is it important to know the healthy foods to eat but avoiding the foods that can disrupt your gut microbiome is just as important.
Remove the red meat: Red meats increase the microbes in the gut that can contribute to inflammation. And red meat that is high in fat, can reduce the good gut bacteria that in turn leads to a breakdown of the intestinal lining.
Say "no" to sugary sweets: That decadent donut may be calling your name but it's high-fat, sugary sweetness is an inflammatory trigger just like red meat. Reach for a healthier alternative like fresh fruit or try your favourite nut spread on celery.
Avoid adult beverages: Overindulging in alcohol increases inflammation in the gut and decreases the healthy gut microbes. If the intestinal barrier becomes compromised it can lead to leaky gut. If you want a refreshing beverage, try a sparkling probiotic drink or some kombucha, which can help with digestive function.
Being mindful of your eating habits can go a long way in helping to promote your overall gut health. Be sure to eat a healthy, balanced diet while avoiding those foods that can harm your gut health.
