myVisionTrack
Not only does the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approve drugs and therapies, they also approve software for medical use and they recently approved the myVisionTrack iPhone app for use as a vision test. myVisionTrack‚Ñ¢ is an accurate home diagnostic system available as an app that allows patients with macular degeneration and other retinal diseases to self-monitor their own visual acuity. Vital Art and Science is the creator of the app and the test uses a shape discrimination test to evaluate visual function at home. The test results are stored and automatically compared to previous test results. If a significant change is noted, the patient's doctor is alerted to review the results to see if a follow-up visit is warranted. Currently, the app is only available by prescription and is only compatible with the iPhone 4S. Developers hope to have the app available commercially by the 4th Quarter of 2013 and will eventually have the app available on any smartphone.*
