Many people may not be surprised at the findings of a recent survey which showed that the majority of eye injuries are sustained by men. The survey which was conducted by the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) and the American Society of Ocular Trauma (ASOT) found that a startling 73.5% of eye injuries happen to men. This is nearly three times the eye injuries that occur in women.
The survey had other interesting statistics. 52% of all eye injuries occurred at home. Of these injuries occurring at home, one in four was due to play or sport activities. Home repair or power tools were responsible for 25% of the reported injuries at home. The places where eye injuries were most likely to occur at home were the yard or the garden.
People between the ages of 30 and 64 suffered almost half of the reported injuries while children 12 years of age or younger only accounted for 12% of eye injuries. The time of day in which most of the injuries were sustained was between noon and 7 p.m.
The AAO and ASOT recommend every household to have at least one pair of? ANSI-approved protective eyewear to be worn when engaged in projects and activities around the home in order to prevent eye injuries.*
