A vitamin D deficiency may make a person more likely to develop dry eye syndrome.
Researchers recently evaluated the link between serum vitamin D level and dry eye by reviewing data from ten studies that had previously been done on that subject.
The data analysis revealed that patients with dry eye had serum vitamin D levels that were lower than those with healthy levels of vitamin D. The findings suggest that lower levels of vitamin D cause increased dry eye symptoms and lower tear production.
Additional studies are needed to determine whether vitamin D has protective function in relation to dry eye.
