Blue-light filtering (BLF) intraocular lenses (IOL) were the focus of a recent study to determine if they help lower the risk of developing wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
Very limited human study data is available in regards to the effect of long-term exposure to blue light despite it being considered a risk factor for retinal diseases. Scientists have theorized that reducing blue light exposure may prevent development of wet AMD.
Recently, researchers evaluated data at the Korean National Health Insurance Sharing Service database. They reviewed data from individuals who underwent cataract surgery and received the same type of IOL (BLF or clear) in both eyes within one year between January 2012 and December 2018.
Ultimately, researchers found that there was no protective effect of BFL intraocular lenses but researchers noted that future studies need to examine multi-ethnic populations for longer follow-up periods to further examine possible benefits of BFL intraocular lenses.
