A recent study published in Ophthalmology reveals that men who take multivitamins on a daily basis over a long period of time decrease their risk of developing cataracts. The same study found that multivitamin use had no real effect on macular degeneration.
The study took place over 11 years and involved 14,641 male doctors who were at least 50 years of age and took either a multivitamin or a placebo. What researchers discovered was that there were 872 cases of cataracts among the multivitamin group compared to 945 with the placebo group.
Researchers believe that this modest decrease in cataract risk was notable and that a daily multivitamin regimen was worth considering for men.*
