Researchers published a recent study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition that highlights the potential benefits of eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables in helping reduce the risk of developing cataracts.

Researchers examined previously published randomized trials to determine any link between diet and the development of cataracts. The review involved 20 published articles and all participants were over the age of 40. Cataracts are the cause of 35% of all vision loss in the world.

The study findings did support the benefits of eating a diet rich in fruits, dark green, leafy vegetables, carrots and tomatoes to help reduce the risk of developing cataracts. The results of this study warrant further studies regarding the link between cataracts and specific dietary intake.
