A randomized trial that was conducted by researchers at Friedrich Schiller University in Germany, found that supplements containing lutein, zeaxanthin and omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFAs) greatly improved plasma antioxidant capacity. The study involved 172 patients who had dry age-related macular degeneration and were divided into three groups. One group received a capsule containing 10 mg of lutein, 1 mg of zeaxanthin, 100 mg of docosahexaenoic acid and 30 mg of eicosapentanoic acid daily and another group received double that does and a third group received a placebo. What researchers discovered was that the group that received the doubled dosage saw an improvement in their plasma antioxidant capacity, circulating macular xanthophyll levels and optical density of the macular pigment compared to the group that only received one capsule.
