Results from a recent study which involved 172 patients with dry age-related macular degeneration showed that taking lutein, zeaxanthin, and omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids helped increase the optical density of the macular pigment.
The study evaluated the administration of 10 mg of FloraGLO lutein, 1 mg of zeaxanthin and 100 mg DHA plus 30 mg EPA in a commercially available formulation as well as twice these dosages. Both dosages increased the optical density of the macular pigment. In addition, the visual acuity performance increased greatly in both of the dosages over the course of one year.
Researchers noted that while no general implications for clinical practice can be given, they do state that such supplementation may be beneficial AMD patients and since the single dose was as effective as the double does, there is no need to use the higher dose.
