A national study finds that cataract surgery proves to be beneficial to age-related macular degeneration (AMD) patients. The American Academy of Opthalmology details this report in their November issue of Opthalmology.
Patients with all stages of AMD noticed improved vision upon having cataract surgery.? In addition, improvement was noted in patients with either "wet" or "dry" AMD.
The study also showed that high doses of vitamins C, E and beta-carotene along with zinc reduce the risk of progression to advanced AMD by 25 percent.
